Founded in Daryaganj, Delhi, India in 1920 by Mr. Kundan Lal Gujral, Moti Mahal has grown to become a worldwide brand as the Moti Mahal Group, with the flagship brand of Moti Mahal Delux Tandoori Trail Restaurants leading the way in the Indian fine dining scene. Moti Mahal has also branched into fast-food kiosks / takeaway kiosks with the Moti Mahal Express brand. Moti Mahal is credited with the invention of several iconic North Indian dishes like Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken and Dhal Makhani, as well as popularising the Tandoori oven as a cooking method around the world.

Currently, Moti Mahal has over 90 outlets throughout India, with the majority of outlets located in Delhi. Ambience differs from outlet to outlet, the low-end ambience includes those located in food courts or the takeaway kiosks, which are quite standard, while the high-end fine dining restaurants has designs influenced by the franchise owner. The Moti Mahal brand has consistently won many international awards for design / ambience and food.

Service at Moti Mahal is efficient and polite. As a franchise, staff are trained for either fine dining service, or express kiosk service, but both are pretty good in terms of standards. Hygiene and cleanliness is also well observed at Moti Mahal. However, most dishes are only prepared upon order, so you'll have to wait some time (~ 10 - 20 minutes) for your food.

Food at Moti Mahal is excellent. Besides their 3 iconic inventions of Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken and Dhal Makhani, Moti Mahal also offers an extensive range of dishes. Other popular dishes include the Chicken Pakora, Kalmi Kebab, Paneer Makhani, Murg Bemisal and Malai Kofta. Moti Mahal specialises in North Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine, and their non vegetarian dishes are better than their vegetarian dishes.

The legacy of Moti Mahal and Mr. Kundan Lal Gujral has been documented in a book, 'Moti Mahal Tandoori Trail', written by Mr. Monish Gujral, a descendent of the founder. The Shah of Iran was once told that "coming to Delhi without eating at Moti Mahal would be like visiting Agra without seeing the Taj Mahal."
