Zara is a clothing and accessories retail chain that was first founded in 1975 in Galicia, Spain, by Mr. Amancio Ortega and his wife Mrs. Rosalia Mera. Since then, Zara has grown to become the world's largest fashion retailer, with over 1800 stores worldwide. Zara is unique amongst fashion retailers, because they manage the entire supply-chain, from design, to manufacturing, to distribution. This allows Zara to get new items to stores quickly, as well as keep costs low, and their products relatively affordable.

Zara has a wide range of designs of clothes and accessories for both men and women, and new designs are launched weekly. Up to 11,000 items are design and launched annually, with each new design taking as little as 4 - 5 weeks to reach stores. Zara is unique in the industry because they resist doing advertising, relying on word-of-mouth, as well as bucking the fashion trends, instead directing their attention to designing casual, comfortable clothes which consumers want.

I like Zara for their smart, modern looking clothing. The blazers for men are usually one of the first blazers purchased by students (including me!), and their business attire is a good starter outfit. Their casual attire for men is functional, with clean lines, and usually in solid colours. Suitable for everyday wear, their vast range of designs mean switching out wardrobes is easy and painless. Prices for menswear are considered quite affordable, about mid-range prices comparable to other fashion brands.

In contrast, the prices for ladies clothing at Zara are more expensive than other brands. The high cost is due in part to shipping, as Zara products are mostly manufactured in Spain. But while prices for menswear are competitive, Zara loses out on prices of ladies clothings to its competitors whose manufacturing plants are in Asia.
