Description:
Gulab Jamun originated from Afghanistan, but is now a popular dessert / sweet throughout both North India and South India. Gulab Jamun consists of deep fried dough balls in a warm scented syrup.


The dough balls in Gulab Jamun are traditionally made with milk solids, combined with unsalted butter / clarified butter (Ghee), plain white flour / maida refined wheat flour, water and whole milk. The batter is rolled into balls and deep fried, but at a low temperature. This makes the outside slightly crisp, while the inside is still soft and spongy, with the consistency of a doughnut.

The warm scented syrup for Gulab Jamun is made with white sugar, water, cardamom seeds, and rose water. Some hawkers may also add honey, saffron or pandan / screwpine leaves.

Traditionally, Gulab Jamun is served garnished with chopped nuts, normally pistachio or almonds. Sometimes, Gulab Jamun is served garnished with fresh cream, ice cream, or raisins.
