The Plain Cafe is a cozy cafe, tucked away in the Tanjong Pagar / Duxton area. The Plain Cafe is easy to miss, even if you walked by, as there isn't any prominent signage outside.

Styled after cafes in Melbourne, service at The Plain Cafe is personal and friendly, and based on 'Trust'. Take your pick from the huge menu at the counter, and place your order... And remember what you ordered when making payment, as you'll have to repeat your order to the cashier again! Staff don't record any orders, as they treat the customers on good faith... So it's dependent on your integrity! Also, they only accept payment by cash.

Ambience at The Plain Cafe is simple and minimalist. They do offer newspapers and magazines for browsing, which is a nice touch. The Plain Cafe is quite a cozy place to relax, or chat with friends, but it gets really crowded and noisy during breakfast / lunch hours.

Generally, the range of food available at The Plain Cafe isn't extensive, as they focus mainly on serving light meals such as sandwiches and all day breakfast. Food is generally alright, and I found the Ciabattas are quite good. The Plain Cafe specialty however, is their coffee... And boy, are they proud of their coffee! Engage the baristas in conversation... They'll be happy to tell you about the coffee!

Overall, The Plain Cafe is a great place to chill when it's quiet, and I would definitely recommend trying the coffee.

The dim lighting but spacious interior is well laid out, but ambient noise still tends to increase with a crowd.

The Latte (SGD $4) was really excellent! Easily one of the better Latte's I've had! The Mocha (SGD $4) has a rich, deep chocolate and coffee flavour... very good!

The Pork Salami Ciabatta (SGD $10) was highly recommended by a friend, and it didn't disappoint! The vegetables were fresh, the ciabatta bread nicely toasted and the pork salami lent a nice salty finish to the overall sandwich. Be warned that they run out of sandwiches quickly during peak periods, and you might have to wait about 15 minutes for them to make a new batch.

In that classic Australia / Melbourne style breakfast, the Humpty Dumpty Dippy Eggs & Vegemite Toast Soldiers (SGD $7.50) features crisp toast strips, spread with tangy, bitter vegemite! Dip them into the perfectly runny soft boiled eggs for more flavour!

The Turkey Ciabatta (SGD $10) is probably among the best turkey sandwiches I've ever had! This is because the turkey meat is fresh and not dry, plus seasoned beforehand to give it a savoury, salty taste! Paired with creamy fresh avocado, fresh rocket leaves, and a light mayonnaise sauce, this is truely excellent!
