Donut Shops

Donut Shops

Donuts, or Doughnuts, are such a simple to prepare snack. Fried dough in the shape of a ring is coated with various syrups, toppings or fillings. Due to its versatility, Donuts toppings can range from the simple, to outrageous, to unusual. This results in hundreds of different types of donuts being sold today.

In Singapore, I remember when I was younger that Donuts were sold mostly in heartland bakeries. These mostly contained toppings, and there weren't a lot of variety. The most common ones were white sugar crystals, white sugar glaze, rainbow sprinkles, milk chocolate sprinkles, milk chocolate glaze, or curry potato filling.

However, in 2006, the Donut trend / craze started to pick-up in Singapore, and more western-style donut shops opened all over the island. During the height of the craze, people were known to queue for more than 2 hours just to buy these irresistible sweet treats. These new donut shops sold a huge variety of donuts, with all sorts of syrups, toppings and fillings.

Eventually, in 2008, the trend / craze started to die down. Today, only the major players of the Donut industry still operate in Singapore.

Today, toppings and fillings for Donuts can include honey, maple syrup, strawberry sprinkles, strawberry glaze, strawberry topping, cinnamon sugar, cinnamon glaze, vanilla glaze, white chocolate glaze, dark chocolate glaze, caramel glaze, peanut butter topping, peanut topping, hazelnut topping, almond topping, pistachio topping, cheese glaze, raspberry topping, apple topping, blueberry topping, kaya topping, cherry topping, coffee cream, mint cream, orange cream, lemon cream, banana cream, mango cream, durian cream, passion fruit cream, butter cream, green tea cream, oreo cookie crumbs, cornflakes, custard and more.

What I look for when buying Donuts is the range / variety available, the texture of the dough, and the size of the Donuts. I generally prefer sweet rather than savoury Donuts. The dough should be soft but not stretchy, and support the toppings well. If a filling is used, it should be filled liberally. If possible, I'll rather get smaller sized Donuts, that way, I'll be able to sample different flavours.
