Opening their doors to Singaporeans in June 2013, Xcape Singapore holds the distinction of being the pioneer; the first ever provider of real-life escape room games in Singapore. While the early days were simple lock-and-key puzzles paired with physical and intellectual challenges, Xcape Singapore has kept up with the times, regularly changing their technology and themed rooms. Today, their rooms feature moderately advanced / high technology, coupled with engaging puzzles. Repeat visits are worthwhile, as they change their themed rooms every year.

Xcape Singapore allows a total of 60 minutes of playing time within the rooms, with a further 10 minutes of miscellaneous time for briefings, phototaking, storing personal items, or waiting. Briefings are carried out by staff face to face, and they provide the background and story of the room you've selected. Some hints are given at the beginning of the game, though most of the information shared is safety related. Recommended team size for each room is between 4 - 8 people. There is a chronological sequence to the games that reveals a unifying storyline, revolving around the mysterious Dr. Hachi.

Rates at Xcape Singapore is SGD $28 per person during peak periods, and SGD $22 during off-peak periods, marginally more expensive than elsewhere. Xcape Singapore provides lockers for storing of personal items, but toilets are small, and inconveniently located. The game rooms are semi-immersive, as the story and settings sometimes don't mesh well. But you can still look forward to decent physical and intellectual challenges, clever room design and layouts, use of mood lighting, and a good mix of low and high technology such as lasers, unusual locks, trapdoors, audio tracks, mirrors, ultra-violet ink, or magnets!

Staff at Xcape Singapore are friendly and helpful, but asking for more than 2 hints is discouraged. This leads to teams being mostly self-reliant, though the ample time allows for a slightly relaxed game pace as compared to elsewhere. They have a reputation of starting the time even if you're late, reducing your overall play time. Best to arrive 15 minutes early. Xcape Singapore has a reputation for its horror themed rooms, but once you've played, you realise the scare factor is all in your head, a result of overactive imagination. Overall, I find Xcape Singapore to be pretty good in service and game quality, little wonder they've grown more popular over the last 3 years!

This is where it all began. The Walking Dead Terminus Escape was their claim to fame, an outdoor real-life escape room game, based on horror / thriller / drama television series The Walking Dead. Teams were actually pursued by zombies in this event!

The Tomb Raider is styled as an Asian burial ground, filled with treasures scattered amongst the bones of the dead. This Season 2 room is reputed for its many unlockable chambers and overt scary setting. It requires teamwork, physical movement, strength, agility, speed, courage, lateral thinking, logical deduction, analytical reasoning, observational skills, patience, memorizing ability, and persistence, to solve the puzzles within 60 minutes. Do note that crawling is required (not suitable for claustrophobics), and the symbol locks require effort and technique to open even with the correct combination.

Despite being inspired by the classic video game of the same name, the Resident Evil room, an evil science / laboratory themed room, isn't particularly scary. This high technology, season 2 room is only slightly creepy, and the puzzles rely more on physical ability and technique than intellectual ability. It requires teamwork, physical movement, strength, agility, speed, courage, logical deduction, analytical reasoning, observational skills, shooting accuracy, and persistence, to solve the puzzles within 60 minutes.

Inspired by the television series of the same name, the Vampire Diary is a supernatural creature themed room with roleplaying elements. This season 2 room takes place largely in a single room with several sections, and is notable for being tedious and frustrating at the beginning, with a shocking, dramatic twist at the end. It requires teamwork, strength, speed, courage, strategic planning, crisis management skills, lateral thinking, analytical reasoning, patience, and persistence, to solve the puzzles within 60 minutes.
