Founded in 2011, Mocha Coffees And Conversations is a chain of hipster cafes, with outlets across India. In the more cosmopolitan cities, it is but one amongst many cafe options. However, in Ahmedabad, where such options are limited, Mocha Coffees And Conversations really stands out as an oasis for the young, a place to gather, to see and be seen. No surprise then, that it tends to be packed, even despite their higher than usual prices.

Ambience at Mocha Coffees And Conversations is classic hipster, think retro industrial feel with eclectic artwork. The dim, warmly lit place spans 2 stories, its spacious interior lined with all manner of furniture in different forms, from wooden cushioned couches to metallic chairs. Exposed brick walls, metal pipes overhead, and metal doors, along with decorative light bulbs, an indoor garden, and vibrant street art, complete the hipster look. A projector screen hangs on a wall, for diners to watch live cricket matches. They even offer free wifi here, though it requires a lengthy registration process.

Service at Mocha Coffees And Conversations is average. Despite the small army of staff, requests get done slowly, and we even had to remind them several times. Mostly, staff just mill around or stand in the corner, which looks really odd when all 12 of them gather. Not really helpful or interested, just... there. Like background. The worst part of the dining experience here, though there were no mistakes, the excellent service you usually get elsewhere in the city makes the poor service here painfully obvious.

Food at Mocha Coffees And Conversations is hipster fare. A mash-up fusion menu features both Western and Indian options. Generally, the Indian food is much better, tastier, and consistently well-executed. That said, the Western options are decent enough, and it's difficult to find better ones in this city, making this more than passable. Portions are large, and best shared. Prices are higher than usual, a monopoly Mocha Coffees And Conversations has on the weak cafe scene here. Budget about INR ₹500 / SGD $10.70 per person for a meal here.

Unique to the Malabar coast in India, the coffee beans of the Coffee Monsoon Malabar (INR ₹95 / SGD $2.10) are processed in a special manner. The harvested coffee beans are exposed to monsoon rain and wind for about 3 - 4 months, which causes them to lose their acidity. This results in the blend having a bold, heavy yet smooth body, with a dry, musky earthy aroma of chocolate and spice. Tastes of oak, with a mild caramel chocolate flavour, notes of nuts and spice, and a smoky undercurrent. Really quite exquisite, one of the better blends I've had.

Can't go wrong with the Chicken 65 (INR ₹225 / SGD $4.80), a South Indian speciality. Love the moist, tender chunks of boneless chicken, coated in a sticky sweet spicy sauce. The heat is mild at the start, but gradually builds towards the back, with a fiery burn that lingers on. Increases in intensity the more you eat. Good!

There's no beef here, so the Spicy Chipotle Cheese Burger (INR ₹200 / SGD $4.30) features a large, moist, chicken patty, over a medley of vegetables, sandwiched between soft burger buns that have a light fragrance from the sesame seeds. The sharp savoury sour spicy chipotle sauce tastes localised, though it lends needed flavour to the rather mild tasting chicken. Love the fluffy thick cut chips which carry good potato flavour. Alright dish in my context, but very good in the context of this city.
