The Bread Table was founded in July 2013 by ex-IT engineer Joseph Lee, who quit his job and completed a baking course from the French Culinary Institute in New York. Over the years, The Bread Table had several outlets across the island, but today, they operate solely out of the primary outlet in the Kovan area of Singapore, which opened in July 2016. The Bread Table, as their name suggests, specialises in freshly baked French bread and pastries.

Ambience at The Bread Table is simple and casual. The small floor space is neatly arranged with functional metal furniture, and lit by low, warm lights. Doesn't feel inviting, more like an eat-and-go kind of place. However, the aroma of fresh baked bread and pastries, along with the appetizing display of their products, is very enticing. Most customers actually order takeaway though.

Service at The Bread Table is completely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection over the counter. Staff are well versed in the various types of bread and pastries available, and can offer recommendations. I applaud their effort to take special requests as well. However, they're not efficient at clearing away empty / dirty tables when diners leave, even despite the small area, resulting in tables looking messy.

Food at The Bread Table revolves around French style bread and pastries, harkening back to the traditional loaves. Founder Joseph Lee has put his own spin on them, striking a balance between the heavier textures of traditional European breads with the Singaporean preference for soft and fluffy bread. His home style recipes seem to have caught on, and customers often clear out the daily offerings. The menu is kept small, focused on sandwiches. Portions are sized for individuals. Prices are affordable too, budget about SGD $18 per person for a meal here.

The core team of bakers here are Le Cordon Bleu trained, and they use traditional French bread-making techniques, and a natural fermentation process, for their fresh bread.

Their coffee, including the Caffè Latte (SGD $4.80), features coffee beans sourced from Toby's Estate. You're almost assured of getting a good quality cuppa here.

The House Hot Chocolate (SGD $4) is nice, with a medium thick texture, not too thick and not too thin. Good robust sweet chocolate flavour, without much sediment. Worth ordering!

The Baguette Plain (SGD $2.60) has a thin, crisp exterior which cracks satisfiyingly, giving way to an airy, moist interior. Light taste of sweet grains on the palate, with a fragrant aroma.

Despite its looks, the Brioche Sea Salt (SGD $2.80) actually has a pillowy soft texture, with an enticing buttery sweet flavour, contrasted by light salty notes. The alternating contrast works well on the palate.

The Croissant Plain (SGD $2.80) has a beautiful crisp crust, shattering delicately with a soft crunch. Texture is moist and airy, though not as light as elsewhere. While the buttery flavour is light, this has good sweet earthy bready notes, tasting much more natural.

The French Onion Bread (SGD $2) is less dense than its traditional counterpart, but I like the soft, semi-airy texture here. Flavour is earthy sweet savoury, with notes from the onion and herbs. Think it'll make a good bread to soak up curry haha.

Served warm, the Cinnamon Bun Original (SGD $3.80) has a soft, moist, chewy texture. The cinnamon sugar has been delicately applied, giving it a balanced sweet spice flavour. This is among their best signature dessert pastries. Highly recommended!

Love the Cinnamon Bun Red Velvet (SGD $3.80), for its soft, moist, chewy texture, and the delicate application of cinnamon sugar, giving it a light sweet spice flavour. This is in stark contrast to the intensely sweet, overwhelming versions elsewhere. Infused with beetroot puree, giving it a vibrant red colour, and with cream cheese served on the side, or over the top, this rendition is very good, and will appeal to those who want a light dessert pastry.

The Triple Decker Melt Sandwich With Side Salad (SGD $15) is a huge, filling meal. The Triple Decker Melt Sandwich consists of 3 thick slices of Sourdough Bordelaise bread, stuffed with gourmet ham, salami, roasted sundried tomatoes, cranberries, romaine lettuce, mayonnaise, home made honey, mustard, gouda cheese, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese. Served with a Side Salad of romaine lettuce, mayonnaise, and bread croutons. Flavours are nicely sweet savoury salty sour cheesy, with textures of crunchy, chewy, juicy, creamy, crispy. Excellent and delicious. Couldn't finish it, the portion was so huge. Highly recommended!

The Cajun Chicken Sandwich (SGD $9) is pretty good, with the soft French Onion Bread stuffed with tender, moist chicken rubbed in Cajun spices (salt, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, onion powder, oregano, thyme, cayenne pepper), along with romaine lettuce, mayonnaise, and gouda cheese. Each bite is fresh, crunchy, moist, tender, then the flavours of sweet savoury spicy gently coat the palate. Good!
