Established since 1989, Swee Heng Bakery & Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery is a fantastic example of a Singaporean bakery that maintains the traditions of the past, while innovating for the future. This halal-certified bakery comprises 2 distinct brands; the 1st is Swee Heng Bakery, their original chain of traditional bakeries, with outlets located amongst the heartlands, producing simple, affordable baked goods, breads, confectioneries, and pastries, the kind loved by people of all ages. The 2nd is Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery, the modern, innovative bakery concept that retails exciting, tasty, and picture-worthy creations, with outlets located in swanky shopping malls.

Ambience at Swee Heng Bakery & Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery differs. The traditional outlets are sparse and simple, brightly lit places with white and beige walls, where baked goods are displayed in neat shelves. The modern outlets channel a hipster industrial vibe, warm lighting against shades of black and wood, with eye-catching baked goods in large, clear displays. Some of the modern outlets feature sit-down cafes, which are casual, comfortable, and bustling with activity. However, most outlets are pure takeaway stalls.

Service at Swee Heng Bakery & Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery also differs by outlet. The traditional outlets are staffed by heartlanders, so you usually get noisy, but quick and efficient service. Don't expect much conversation, as staff are brusque. The modern outlets have some semblance of politeness, but I'm glad that service is also quick and efficient. Either way, staff display basic product knowledge on their baked goods, though at the modern outlets, you can put in special requests for customisation.

Food at Swee Heng Bakery & Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery is all about baked goods - breads, cakes, dessert pastries, confectioneries, and simple snacks. The traditional outlets feature well loved classics, usually straightforward bread with 1 or 2 ingredients. The modern outlets push the flavour profile, with novel creations that have unusual combinations of ingredients. Taste is consistently good across all their outlets, which is commendable. Quality is good, and portion size is usually suitable for individuals. Prices are affordable, budget about SGD $3 per person for 1 - 2 pieces of baked goods here.

The White Bread & Brown Bread (SGD $1.20 per loaf) both have fluffy soft textures, just the way Singaporeans like it. The difference lies in the taste; the white bread has a delicate wheat grain flavour, while the brown bread has a robust wholemeal grain flavour.

The Yam Bun (SGD $1.80 for 4 pieces) is decent, with a fluffy soft bread that envelopes a sticky filling of smooth, creamy yam taro paste. Flavour is earthy sweet, well balanced, and light.

Loved the Kaya Bun (SGD $1.80 for 4 pieces), with its fluffy soft bread texture and generous filling of sticky, smooth, rich kaya / coconut egg jam paste. Done Hainanese style, which lacks pandan / screwpine leaf, instead having a bold gula melaka / palm sugar taste, which is more earthy sweet in flavour. Highly recommended!

The Coconut Bun (SGD $2.20 for 4 pieces) has a generous filling of gula melaka / palm sugar infused dessicated coconut, within a fluffy soft bread. Nicely earthy floral sweet in flavour. Best eaten warm.

The Old Smokey (SGD $2.20) is a novel creation, with a curry spice infused garlic bread, stuffed with shredded smoked chicken breast. The spicy fragrance and savoury spice flavour of the bread complements the smoky chicken well, creating a nice harmony on the palate. I wish the chicken was a little more moist though.

The 5 Grain With Purple Sweet Potato (SGD $2.80) has a soft, tearable texture, and the combination of 5 varieties of grains lend a nice earthy fragrance to the bread. The earthy sweet flavour of the mashed purple sweet potato is lovely, and I like the generous portion spread throughout the inner rings of this unique looking bread. Good!

The Charcoal Tom Yum Seafood (SGD $1.70) lives up to its name, with the soft, fluffy, fragrant charcoal infused bun having a generous stuffing of spicy herbal sour sweet seafood paste. Notes of squid and lemongrass, along with fish sauce and chili, though the complexity of the spices mask most of the other ingredients. Has a short, quick burning sensation on the palate.

The Walnut Cranberry Cream Cheese (SGD $1.60) has a fluffy soft bun, filled with smooth rich cream cheese, studded with crunchy walnuts and chewy dried cranberries. Flavours of fruity sweet salty cheesy, lovely. Filling snack, but tasty enough that most will finish it in a sitting. Good!

The Garlic Chicken Floss Roll (SGD $1.60) is nice because of its fragrant garlic and herb aroma, and the soft chewy texture to the bread. Stuffed with a generous amount of chewy savoury chicken floss within, making for a lovely combination.

The Classic Otah (SGD $1.60) has a soft, fluffy bread, on top of which lies embedded strips of savoury spicy otah. Not overly fiery, it's paired with a cool mayonnaise dressing and cheese. A true Modern Singaporean classic bun. Good!

The Tuna Mushroom Danish (SGD $2) has a slightly crisp, flaky bready puff pastry crust with a light buttery flavour. Within, a generous stuffing of chewy tuna chunks, crunchy onions, and tender button mushrooms. They don't mix it with mayonnaise, so their version is lighter and less filling. The flavour is light savoury sweet, without any fishy taste. Good!

Absolutely love the Chicken Luncheon Meat Egg (SGD $1.60), because its a childhood favourite of mine. The soft, fluffy, chewy bread / bun has a meaty savoury slab of spam / luncheon meat, which isn't overly salty. Paired with a tender slice of egg omelette, this is my idea of a delicious breakfast bun. Highly recommended!

Despite its vibrant, colourful appearance, the Huat Kueh / Gluten-Free Steamed Rice Flour Cupcakes (SGD $2.80 for 5 pieces) largely tastes the same. Delicate rice flavour, dense and spongy in texture. Very filling too.

The classic Pandan Chiffon Cake (SGD $3.80 for 4 pieces) is done in traditional style, the soft and airy sponge cake infused with fragrant sweet floral pandan / screwpine leaf. Very satisfiying. Worth ordering!

The Hokkaido Waltz Cupcake Matcha Adzuki Bean (SGD $2.80) is decent. I felt the fluffy sponge cake could have been more light and airy instead of dense, but at least the buttery flavour is properly delicate. The matcha green tea cream is earthy herbal sweet and creamy rich in texture, while the adzuki red beans lend a chewy grainy feel and an earthy sweet flavour. Expected more out of this though.

Love the Rainbow Lapis (SGD $9.80), with its vibrant, colourful look, its buttery sweet flavour, and soft bouncy texture. Makes for a good dessert cake, and an attractive one too. I received this, and shared it amongst colleagues.

The French Loaf Set (SGD $4.60) makes for a good snack. A choice of drink (like Kopi Siu Dai or Teh C), along with wobbly Soft Boiled Eggs with a dash of light soy sauce and pepper, served with Peanut Butter & Kaya French Loaf. The French loaf bread is so soft, filled with a chunky nutty peanut butter and sticky sweet pandan kaya / screwpine leaf coconut egg jam. Pretty good, slightly above average in quality.

The Signature Nasi Lemak (SGD $6.20) is a straightforward meal. The white rice has been infused with coconut milk, giving it a distinct delicate fragrance. The sambal has a nice balance of sweet to spicy. Overall decent execution, edible enough, but nothing outstanding to shout about.

Update Dec-2019: More than 2 years on, and I'm still a regular customer of Swee Heng Bakery & Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery. Many of their signature breads remain on the menu, but they've carried on innovating, producing creative and fresh new bakes. They've also opened more outlets across Singapore. I consider Swee Heng Bakery & Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery to be among the foremost bakeries around, and they're my default choice if I wish to buy bread.

The Pandan Cake (SGD $3.20 for 5 pieces) holds fragrant sweet floral flavour from the use of pandan / screwpine leaf essence. But this smaller sized version has the rich density of a pound cake, with a fluffy moist soft chew. Nice.

The Soya Oreo Cake (SGD $3.80) is beautifully delicate, with an airy light spongy soft texture, and a mild earthy milky sweet flavour, contrasted with a light crunch from the oreo cookie crumble. Novel idea, pretty good.

Named for the distinctive tiger strips it carries, the Tiger Roll (SGD $3.30) is a type of Swiss roll that features a light moist spongy soft butter Swiss roll on the outside, surrounding a swirl of multi-flavoured Swiss roll on the inside, layered with rich creamy smooth plain buttercream. The version here carries 4 flavours; chocolate, strawberry, pandan / screwpine leaf, and coffee. Each has its own distinct sweet taste, making this great for sharing, or for an indulgent treat.
