Have fond memories dining at Restaurant HOME, finally have a chance to visit since they moved in July 2016, from Bukit Timah to their new location in the Loyang / Changi area. The aptly named Restaurant HOME still remains a stalwart of home-cooked, Chinese comfort food, and together with their friendly, attentive service and quiet, relaxed ambience, still manages to draw in the crowds despite the off-beat location. Chef Tan Yong Hua draws on the kampung feel of the area to create tasty, tantalising dishes for the extensive menu, and we were fortunate to sample the upcoming Chinese New Year 2018 festive menu.

Ambience at Restaurant HOME is laid-back, casual, and relaxing, having an old kampung village vibe. The ample natural greenery around the area is calming, while the restored colonial bungalow lends a touch of old world elegance to the place. Within, the small floor area is neatly lined with sturdy and comfortable rosewood furniture, brightly lit with ample natural sunlight. Suitable for large groups, as well as small conferences and business meetings. They also have a large overflow hall with sheltered outdoor seating, kept cool with fans.

Service at Restaurant HOME is friendly and attentive, really feels personalised, as if you're dining in a friend's house. The staff are engaging and will quickly seat guests. Despite the extensive menu, if questioned, staff do display decent product knowledge, being able to describe dishes. They also proactively offer to clear empty / finished plates throughout the meal. If requested, staff will assist to portion out dishes, though normally, they allow diners to perform portioning themselves.

The Beer Taverner’s Honey Ale (SGD $7.25) is an American pale ale, brewed by Taverner's Tasmanian Boutique Brewery in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. It has a dark, murky amber brown colour, with aromas of honeydew melon, caramel, oak, and molasses. The body is thin, light, and mellow, with tastes of honey, liquorice, toasted barley, and toffee. Pleasantly light sweet bitter flavours, with a dry malty finish.

The Double-Boiled Amidori Abalone With Chicken And Night Blooming Cereus Soup is hearty and comforting, the warm soup / broth having a delicate herbal savoury sweet flavour. The luxurious amidori abalone within is tender with a satisfiying chew, while the tender savoury chicken and stringy floral night blooming cereus lend complementing notes. Nicely done, helps to open the appetite.

The Barbecued Duck With Lychee Wood is Chef's signature, featuring a half or whole duck, gently barbecue roasted over lychee wood, infusing it with a smoky floral aroma. The duck is tender and moist, deeply savoury, with a soft salty skin that pairs perfectly with sour plum sauce. Each bite is so satisfiying, with a light juicy chew. Highly recommended!

The Braised Green Wrasse With Roast Pork, Leek, And Flower Mushrooms is a dish that signifies abundance. The tender green wrasse fish is fresh and sweet savoury in flavour, the fresh fish meat flaking off easily. The fish skin is slightly crisp, and holds up decently despite being coated in gravy. Garnished with tender roasted pork belly, crunchy leeks, and chewy flower mushrooms, in a fortifiying, deeply earthy savoury salty gravy. A rather uncommon dish that seems to be making a resurgence this year.

Nothing too surprising about the Duet Of Pork Ribs With Barbecued Sauce And Stir-Fried Kai Lan With Preserved Sausage, just that it's well executed. The barbecued pork ribs have a nice ratio of fat to lean pork meat, giving it a succulent juicy tender texture, with good savoury sweet salty notes. The crunchy kai-lan / Chinese kale / Chinese broccoli is fresh and vegetal sweet, contrasted beautifully with the chewy salty lup cheong / preserved Chinese pork sausage. Good!

The Pan-Fried King Prawn With Superior Soy Sauce is a straightforward take, where freshness is key. Presented in the 1980s style, the king prawns are juicy, meaty, sweet savoury salty, and delicious. The sticky sauce contributes heavily here, lending a robust depth of flavour.

Love the presentation of the Fragrant Rice With Dried Scallop And Preserved Meat Wrapped In Lotus Leaf, where this Chinese Cantonese dish is presented fully enveloped in a lotus leaf. Open it, and the enticing aroma wafts everywhere. The sticky glutinous rice has taken on earthy sweet savoury salty notes, and the garnish of dried scallops, lup cheong / preserved Chinese pork sausage, shiitake mushrooms, and chicken, complete this comforting dish. Very filling too, especially so towards the end of a meal.

The Black Sesame Glutinous Rice Ball In Longan Red Dates Tea is light, and aids to round off the Prosperous Set Menu E (SGD $558++ for 8 pax, $688++ for 10 pax). The glutinous rice ball just bursts with earthy sweet black sesame paste when bit, and the light longan and red dates tea soup / broth complements with earthy fruity sweet notes. Crunchy snow fungus rounds it out. Good!

The Honey Mead King Pork Ribs (SGD $??) is an off-menu, experimental dish, specially created by Chef. The pork ribs are infused with the dessert honey mead, giving them a bold sweet flavour, yet, it's balanced enough that you still taste the savoury salty fatty meat. Tasty, these disappeared all too quickly.

The Stir-Fried Mala Pork Lard (SGD $10) is an off-menu appetizer created for regulars. This sinful, decadent bowl features onions, bell peppers / capsicum, and cubes of pork lard, stir-fried with mala sauce. Expect bursts of sharp spicy sour notes, followed by the enticing taste of the crisp pork lard. Ultra sinful, best shared.

The Honey Mead Granita (SGD $??) is an off-menu, experimental dessert, specially created by Chef. The shaved ice granitas are infused with the dessert honey mead, giving them a boozy, sweet sour tangy flavour. A little too intense to eat all at one go, I wasn't able to finish it. Might work better in a smaller portion, or if paired with something else.

Very pleased with the dining experience at Restaurant HOME, it's as good as I remember it to be. Despite the out-of-the-way location, Restaurant HOME is a good destination dining choice for comfort Chinese food, attentive service, and relaxing ambience. Their mid-range prices also make them suitable for business dining or special occasions. Will return to Restaurant HOME for more homely meals!
