Part of the Singapore Urban Design Festival 2018 held from 14 - 18 March 2018 in the Tanjong Pagar & Keong Saik areas, the Urban Ventures Street Party - Vol. 9 (by Lopelab) explores the potential of urban design and placemaking. This was achieved through the pedestrianisation of streets, mounting temporary art installations in public spaces, and community engagement, via design projects, engaging activities, and platforms for art and music.

There were a plethora of events at the Urban Ventures Street Party - Vol. 9 (by Lopelab) in the Keong Saik area. The pop-up stalls were interesting and varied, retailing items from hand made accessories to artisanal ice cream to local art pieces and more. In the background, a rotating list of disc jockeys (DJs) kept the music going, providing a lively atmosphere. And every 2 hours, there was a showcase, from pole aerobics to yoga workshops to salsa dancing.

Activate Public Space

The greater Tanjong Pagar area has strategically placed temporary art installations to activate engagement in public spaces. The City Bubble by PAGAA introduces aspects of surprise, joy, and playfulness, with its irregular spheres inspired by soap bubbles, inviting the public to sit, lean, or climb on them.

With Ba(N)g! by WY-TO, this creative installation uses a multitude of shaped plastic bags to symbolise the wastefulness of excessive use of plastic, its subsequent environmental consequences, and through interaction, educate the public to practise reduction.

The What's The Potential Of 7.6m2 by Francesco Rossini uses a static installation to reflect the size of 7.6m2, which is the amount of available public space per Singaporean. A rather abstract concept which invites the public to explore its dimensions.

The Sound Tunnel by SNA x Yuta Nakayam Interactive Design is a responsive urban space design concept, where pedestrians walking through the underpass will be accompanied by an interactive experience of light and sound, activated by motion sensors. This invites the public to pause and admire, introducing a whimsical element to a daily routine.

The Sombra Verde by AIR Lab, SUTD installation, whose name means 'Green Shade' in Spanish, is an urban pavilion designed from bamboo poles, plant-based polymer 3D printed connectors, and a plant-based polymer green canopy, resembling a tree. Under its shade, local musicians, including Soph T., Xingfoo&Roy, and Disco Hue, jammed their hearts out, attracting the crowd.

I enjoyed my time at this event, particularly listening to local music. The Urban Ventures Street Party is supposed to be held once every 3 - 4 months, and I hear they're planning the next venue to be near the Chinatown area of Singapore. Lookout for it!
